Introduction

Adam Back is a British cryptographer and cypherpunk who made significant contributions to digital currency and cryptography. He is best known for inventing Hashcash in 1997, a proof-of-work system designed to combat email spam and denial-of-service attacks, which later became a fundamental component of Bitcoin’s mining algorithm.

As the founder and CEO of Blockstream, a blockchain technology company, Back continues to be influential in the cryptocurrency space. He was one of the first people cited in Satoshi Nakamoto’s Bitcoin whitepaper and was allegedly among the first people contacted by Satoshi when Bitcoin was under development, leading some to even speculate that he might be Satoshi Nakamoto himself (though he has denied this).

Back holds a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Exeter and has had involvement in privacy and cryptography projects throughout his career.

Back has repeatedly denied any claims that he is Satoshi Nakamoto.
